How to update your Samsung Galaxy device
Keeping your Samsung Galaxy device up to date ensures you have the latest features, security improvements, bug fixes, and performance enhancements. You can update your device wirelessly or by using the Smart Switch application on a computer.
Note:
- Once your device has been updated to the latest software version, you cannot downgrade to a previous firmware version due to enhanced security policies.
- Make sure your battery is charged to at least 20%.
- Do not disconnect the USB cable or use your device while an update is in progress.
- Your device may restart several times during the update process.
- On some phones, it may say 'System updates' instead of 'Software update'.
- Menu names, settings, and screen layouts may vary depending on the model and software version.
You can download and install software updates directly on your Galaxy device using a Wi-Fi or mobile data connection.
Step 1. Open Settings > Tap Software update.
Step 2. Tap Check for updates.
Step 3. Follow the on-screen instructions. A "Your software is up to date" message will appear once the software is up to date.
Note: On devices running Android 5.0 (Lollipop) or later, software updates may be downloaded automatically when connected to a mobile data network, depending on your carrier and device settings.
You can also update your Galaxy device by connecting it to a Windows PC or Mac using the Smart Switch application.
Step 1. Open Smart Switch on your PC > Connect your device to your computer using the USB cable provided with your device.
Note: Ensure your device’s USB connection settings are configured to allow file transferring when connected.
Step 2. If a software update is available, Smart Switch will automatically prompt you to update the software or display an option to update.
Step 3. Tap Update and follow the on-screen instructions to download the necessary files and complete the update process.
Security updates are provided to strengthen the security of your device and protect your personal information. To check security updates for your model, visit security.samsungmobile.com.
